Betty Ann (Erdahl) Hughes, 61, a Browning Elementary grade school teacher from Cut Bank, passed away from Pancreatic and Liver cancer on October 2nd at the Northern Rockies Medical Center. Memorial services for Betty will be Saturday October 8th at 2:00 pm at St Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Bear officiating. Whitted Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Betty was born to Otis and Marvel Erdahl on Feb. 3rd, 1950 in Havre, Montana. She grew up in Malta, Montana where she graduated Salutatorian of her high school class. She attended Eastern Montana College in Billings and then transferred to Montana State University in Bozeman to finish her degree in education. Betty graduated in 1972. She worked on continuing her education and later received a master degree from MSU in 2003.
In 1972, Betty began teaching in the Browning school system. She married Ken Hughes in 1974 and they made their home in Cut Bank. Betty taught until 1979, when she decided to take time off work to begin a family. Betty stayed at home to raise her two daughters to school age then returned to the Browning school system. She was an assistant principle at Napi Elementary in Browning for two years. She found she enjoyed teaching more than administration and returned to a classroom position. She retired from the school system in the fall of 2011.
Betty enjoyed learning about computers and any new technology; she liked to be the first one to learn a new gadget. She enjoyed listening to country music and going to concerts. She liked to attend as many as she could. The highlight of this past summer was trip to Hawaii with two of her sisters and her daughter Kendra.
Betty is survived by her husband Ken; daughters, Kendra Rae Hughes of Billings, MT and Kayla Ann Hughes Parson of Fort Hood, TX. She is survived by her sisters Vivian (Tom) Fields of Grants Pass, Oregon; Evelyn (Rick)Heuscher of Browning, Montana ; Gail (Rusty)Goertz , Malta, Montana; and Mary Lou (Lyle) Broadbrooks of Malta, Montana; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers-in law, Lyle Broadbrooks and Gene Steffen.
