David Ratzburg, 94, a long time Ledger area farmer, passed away Friday, October 14, 2011 at the Marias Care Center in Shelby. Funeral services are 2:30 pm Monday, October 17, at the Whitted Funeral Chapel in Shelby, with burial to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery. A reception at the Elks Lodge will follow the services at the cemetery. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Children’s Shrine Hospital in Spokane, WA.
David was born February 1, 1917 at Malden, WA to Ernest & Iva (Morland) Ratzburg. Along with his brother and three sisters, the family moved to the Ledger area in the spring of that year. He continued to live and later farm there throughout his life. He attended Central School through his first year of high school and then graduated from Conrad High School in 1935. On October 26, 1939 he and Virginia Maude Johnson, a teacher at the Central School, were married.
David enjoyed his family, farming, traveling and, in his later years, restoring old cars. He combined traveling and searching for old cars and parts throughout the US. He started with Model T Fords, and later restored several other makes and models, which his family has enjoyed driving over the years.
David was a past Toole County Commissioner and served as a trustee on the Maris River Electric Board. He was a member of the Montana Flying Farmers, Montana Model T Cross Country Assoc., Masonic Lodge, Shelby Elks Lodge and the Shrine.
Survivors include his son Karl (Roberta) Ratzburg of Ledger; daughter, Karen (Ken) Quaschnik of Great Falls; sister, Dora of Polson; grandchildren, Stacie Beyrodt of Cascade, Ernest (Jayne) Ratzburg of Ledger, Bryan (Cathy) Ratzburg of Galata, Stephanie (Graham) Smith of Spokane, WA, and Karrie Ratzburg of Seattle, WA; along with ten great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 51 years, Virginia, in 1991; older brother, Malden Ratzburg; and sisters, Augusta Ross and Irma Keierleber.
