A graveside service for family and friends will be Wednesday December 21st at 2:00 pm at Mountain View Cemetery, Shelby. Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. Tuesday and until noon Wednesday at the Whitted Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will be held at a later date in the spring.
Donna was born November 8th 1932, in Shelby, to parents Bud and Sara Bauer. She graduated from Shelby High School in 1951 then went on to Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Miles City to earn her R.N.
Donna’s first job as a nurse was at St. James Hospital in Butte, MT. After one year, she returned to Shelby, marrying Glen Carter on January 20, 1956. Donna served as the Toole County Health Nurse for several years before Glen and Donna moved to Great Falls in 1963 where she worked as a nursing instructor at the former Columbus Hospital. They returned to Shelby in 1970 where they owned and operated a private Rest Home until 1972. Donna then took a job at the Pondera Medical Center in Conrad and worked there for two years. She started working for the Toole County Hospital in 1977 until her retirement in 1993 where she was In-service Director and Lamaze instructor.
Donna loved to crochet and made hundreds of afghan blankets. She quilted, did ceramics, and loved to read. If she wasn’t crocheting she had a book in her hand. Donna loved to attend her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and activities even though she didn’t know much about how the game was played as long as she was cheering on her family.
Donna was loved by many and even delivered several babies on her own. She had a wonderful smile and it was contagious. Most of all, Donna was a devoted and caring nurse that loved what she did for a living, she cared for the people in her care and everyone was special to her. She wore her nurse’s hat and pins proudly until she retired. As a friend and fellow nurse of Donna recently put it, “Donna was a BIG little person (only 4’11”) who pulled no punches. She was a strict taskmaster, requiring what was RIGHT. And there was no discussion on this.”
Donna is survived by her loving husband, Glen; children, Thomas (Lorette) Carter of Shelby, Jim (Katie) Carter of Great Falls and Teresa (Steve) Jonas of Great Falls; four grandsons Chris, Kyle and Kolby Carter and Jackson Jonas; four granddaughters Alicia (Orrin) Hart, Anna (Chris) Woodhead, Angie Carter and Sarah Mae Jonas; one great granddaughter, Bridgette Hart; a sister; Beverly Hary of Portland, Oregon and many nieces and nephews.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Bud and Sara, and brother, Herbert Bauer.
