Doris was born in Hale Center, TX. She was the only daughter of four children born to Claude W. Hackler and Carrie (Kilgore) Hackler. Her family moved to Carlsbad, NM when she was an infant. She attended Edison Elementary School and Carlsbad High School. After high school she married Aaron Eugene Hood who was later killed in a mining accident. She worked as a nurse at Saint Francis Hospital and later for a doctor in private practice. She married Raymond (Jim) Shafer on Jan. 26, 1965. They lived on North Thomas Street in Carlsbad where they made a home with Jim’s seven year old son George (Randy) Shafer. A daughter was born to Doris and Jim in 1968, Sherri (Shafer) Lackey. The family moved to Alpine, TX where Doris and Jim owned two restaurants - The Dairy Twist and The Spot. Later, they moved back to New Mexico where Doris became a full time homemaker. In 2007 Doris and Jim moved to Shelby when Jim was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s so that they could be close to their daughter Sherri and her family. Doris and Jim had been married 45 years when Jim passed away in 2010.
Doris made many friends throughout the years. When she was younger she loved to go to the barn dance in Carlsbad every Saturday night. After she was married she loved decorating her home and making it a warm, comfortable place for family and friends. She was generous and gave to many charities over the years. Her family will miss her exuberance for life.
