Doris M. Sutherland

January 10, 1928 — May 20, 2017

Doris Mae Sutherland passed from the confines of this world to be with the Lord on May 20, 2017.

Funeral services will be Thursday, May 25, at 10:00 AM at Conrad Mission Church. Burial to follow in Hillside Cemetery.

Doris was born January 10, 1928 in Humbolt, Kansas, one of nine children born to Irvin and Mildred (Cronk) Gurwell.

She met and married Pershing ‘Pike’ Sutherland, a soldier stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas where he was serving his final assignment before being discharged from the Army after the end of World War II.  Pike and Doris were married in March of 1946.

After they were married they moved to Conrad, Montana where they resided together for the next sixty-seven years, until Pike’s passing in June of 2013.

Doris worked as a telephone operator in the office of Mountain Bell, located in the basement under the Conrad Hotel until the birth of their son, Terry.  She then devoted her time to raising their sons, Terry and Jeff.

Doris and Pike purchased and began operating the Tastee Freeze, now known as the Main Drive In, in 1977.  They retired from the restaurant in 1990.  Due to the seasonal nature of the Drive In, they were able to spend many winters with church friends in Three Rivers, TX.

Doris was a born again Christian dedicated to the evangelical tradition of the Christian faith and the movement’s hallmark scripture of John 3:3 “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the Kingdom of God unless they are born again”, and  the verse from John 14:6 “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me”.  Doris was an untiring student of the New Testament of the Holy Bible and dedicated every day of her adult life to her faith.

Doris is survived by sons Terry (Denise) Sutherland, of Bozeman and Jeff (Connie) Sutherland of Conrad, five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband Pike, parents Irvin and Mildred, brothers Donald, Roy, Arnold, and Charles and sisters Marjorie, Myrtle, Ruthie and Charlotte.  Doris was the last remaining member of her family.

Memorials can be given to Conrad Mission Church to sponsor children going to Summer Bible Camp.
