Emily Gudrun (Woldvedt) Greenup

August 31, 1922 — November 8, 2014

Heaven gained the faithful soul of Emily Greenup, 92, on Saturday, November 8, 2014.

A memorial service will be 11:00 am on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Shelby, Montana.  The memorial will be preceded by a committal service at Mountain View Cemetery in Shelby at 10:00 am.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Whitted Funeral Chapel, Shelby.

Emily was born August 31, 1922 in Hingham to her immigrant parents Gunder and Amborg (Standahl) Woldtvedt of Norway.

Living most of her life in Shelby, they remember her as the fun-loving redhead who could be seen caring for her family, supporting the Lutheran Church and working in the community with her younger sister, Ruth Pettigrew.  Emily married the love of her life, Roscoe Greenup, on August 26, 1943, and together they built the family trucking business, had four children and created a legacy of valuing family.

Emily had the type of personality that brought the people around her together for games or for supporting one another during difficult times.  Emily loved flowers, she was neat, well-organized, thrifty and always lived below her means, always using God’s Word as her guide in life, giving faithfully to God’s work.  At times she was the creative mother thinking of games to help her children learn their arithmetic, at times she was a listener, pointing people in the right direction, at a later time in life, she  was the Grandma that welcomed grandchildren to her home for visits and special chocolates.  Most recently she was the Great-Grandma that held all the tiny great grand babies.  She especially enjoyed time spent with others when it benefited someone else or an organization such as the quilters group at St. Luke’s that crafted hundreds of quilts that were sent to those in need.  She often reflected verbally about her family and friends in Shelby who cared and included her in their lives.

Though Emily is no longer here on this Earth, her legacy and influence have forever changed us all.  Her value for family relationships is continued on in the annual Greenup Family Reunion that has been held every year since 1976.  Her generous spirit continues as we who were touched by her are now honoring her memory with our own actions.  We still tell the stories of Emily Greenup, the classy lady with a witty remark and twinkle in her eye.

She is survived by her four children, Robert Greenup of Liberty Lake, WA, James Greenup (Donna) of Colbert, WA,  Elaine Omdal (Robert) of Mead, WA, and Richard Greenup (Carol) of Boise, ID; as well as nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; her sister, Ruth Pettigrew and sister-in-law Anna Mae Woldtvedt, both of Shelby, MT.

Emily joins many of her family members in heaven, her husband, Roscoe; her parents; brothers, Elton, Gordon, Ray and Mike Woldtvedt; and her grandchildren, Jason and Sara Greenup.

Memorials can be sent to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 222 – 2 nd Ave S, Shelby, MT 59474, referencing either the Roscoe and Emily Greenup Educational Fund or the Missions Ministry.  Please visit Emily’s online memorial and leave a message of condolence for the family at www.whittedfuneralchapel.com .  You may also read Emily’s life history at http://goo.gL/vxMWSA
