Evelyn Rosella (Broughton) Sanders died on April 27, 2012 at the Marias Care Center due to natural causes associated with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 92 years, 5 months and 29 days old.
Evelyn was born to John and Anna (Honrud) Broughton on October 28, 1919 in Powers Lake, ND. She attended school and graduated from Stanley, ND in 1937. Following her graduation, Evelyn moved to Montana. She worked at the Snack Shack for Joe & JaDee Black and at Pfannsmith Jewelry, both in Shelby.
January 1, 1941 Evelyn and Chester Lyle Sanders were united in marriage at Shelby. At the beginning of World War II, Chet, Evelyn, and young son Wayne moved to the Seattle area while Chet was employed at the shipyards until he enlisted in the US Army. At the end of WW II, the family moved back to Shelby where Chet was employed at Oil City Roofing. They resided the rest of their living years in Shelby except for a short span in Conrad.
Evelyn held several positions of employment while living in Shelby. She was a bookkeeper for Oil City Roofing, Toole County Treasurer’s Office, and Sanders’ Sheet Metal and Flooring. Chet and Evelyn were also managers for a short while of the Vet’s Club when it was located on Main Street. In the late 1960’s, Evelyn worked for Anthony’s Department Store. She continued this employment for over 15 years but more importantly, she and Chet made their life-long friends, George and Marian Koke. Upon the closing of Anthony’s, Evelyn then went to work for Larson’s Clothing and Toggery, where she transferred to Conrad when Chet was promoted within the highway department. Evelyn transferred back to Larson’s in Shelby when Chet retired. She worked for Jim & Opal Larson until her retirement in early 1990’s.
Upon retirement, Evelyn and Lucille Broughton, her sister-in-law, took 11 bus trips to various parts of the United States and Canada. They enjoyed visiting their families in Arizona during the winter months, although neither wanted to relocate from their homes in Shelby.
Evelyn was a notable crafter. She and Doris Flynn Allmaras, her sister, spent many hours creating “goodies” for their entire families and for selling at Farmer’s Market. Evelyn was also an accomplished needle crafter. She was known throughout the area for her hand-embroidered towels and pillowcases. In her later years, Evelyn enjoyed working in the Home Arts Department at the Marias Fair.
Evelyn was a 67 year member of the V.F.W. Post 2484 Ladies’ Auxiliary. She joined on June 19, 1945 and held numerous offices during her tenure. Evelyn was also a member of St. Luke’s American Lutheran Church.
