Floyd William Ray died peacefully at home on March 25th at the age of 84. The third of four boys, born to Beulah and Banner Ray, Floyd grew up on a farm in Eastern Washington. When he was young, polio paralyzed Floyd below the waist for 2 years. He persevered to have many early adventures, including being chased by a bull, and other minor criminal exploits. His smart aleck sense of humor delighted his wife into his 80s. His childhood shaped a life of family, faith and hard work.
Floyd fought in the Korean War. He spent 21 months in the army, 9 in Korea without break. He rose quickly from private to sergeant. Despite personal pain, he heroically fought for his battalion. Floyd was awarded the Bronze Star, the Korea Medal and three battle stars.
Before the war, he married Virginia (Hilty) Ray. She was always the love of his life, the most important person in the world to him. They settled in Cut Bank, where they raised their four children. He worked for the J. C. Penney Company for over 40 years. At JCP, Floyd mentored numerous young people, teaching them about responsibility.
Floyd was always active in his community. He was the president of the Chamber of Commerce, (twice) city councilman, Santa Claus in the schools for over 30 years and active member of the VFW and the Legion of Honor. Floyd coached little league and Babe Ruth for over 25 years. He participated in the political machinations of the local coffee clutch until the day he died. He raised his kids with his value for community.
Floyd was inspired by his deep faith. He grew up in the church. Over 54 years, Floyd was a deacon, elder and Sunday School teacher at First Presbyterian Church in Cut Bank. Even into his 80s, he led Bible studies. Above all, he was a faithful man.
Floyd and Virginia placed the greatest value on family. Spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren delighted him. He formed wonderful stories and memories around hunting and fishing with his family. He loved to gofer hunt with his grandkids and friends. The gofer population will not miss Floyd.
Floyd's wife Virginia died on November 23, 2013. His oldest daughter, Diane, passed away in 2001. Diane and Tim Taves of Great Falls had two children Matthew Taves and Heather Hart, who married Jonathan to have Floyd's two great-grandchildren Marek and Maddison. His daughter Kathy Ray and Donna Carruth had two children, Mariah and Emma from Oakland, CA. Douglas and Sonja Ray had Josie, Jess, and Jaxon of Cut Bank. Duane and Gail Sharkey Ray had son Dylan of Coeur d Alene, ID.
Floyd Ray led a full life of humor, love and service. He will be dearly missed.
