GaNelle Appleton, 76, a retired cashier for the Buttrey Grocery Store in Shelby, passed away on January 10, 2012, at the Shelby hospital from natural causes. The family is inviting neighbors and friends to an ice cream social on Saturday, January 14, from 2:00-6:00 pm at GaNelle’s home, 907 Marias, in Shelby to celebrate her life.
GaNelle was born April 28, 1935 to Fred H and Pauline (Hall) McCarty in Alexandria, Indiana, where she grew up and was educated. She and Clayton H Appleton were married on May 24, 1954 at Forestville, Maryland. They came to Shelby in 1970. GaNelle was a checker at the Buttrey store for 15 years before retiring in 1994. She enjoyed family and friends, cooking, gardening, crafts, nature and birds.
GaNelle is survived by her children, Patty Lee and Leigh Heldstab both of Seward, Alaska, Clay Appleton of Columbia Falls, and Kathy Johnson of Hungry Horse; as well as 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clayton; and two grand-daughters, Becky Snyder and Kathleen Frizzel.
