Gary Lee Berkram, 67, a retired farmer and rancher from Cut Bank passed away Sunday, March 25, 2012 at the Missouri River Medical Center in Fort Benton from complications of myatonic dystrophy after a long and courageous battle. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Whitted Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 31, at 11:00 am at St Paul Lutheran Church in Cut Bank.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia of Cut Bank; son, Shawn (Leanne) Berkram of Tempe, AZ; daughter, Shireen (Rick Cook) Clark of Fort Benton; as well as grandchildren, Tia Clark, Brett and Ian Berkram, and Bradley Williams. Gary is also survived by his sister, Ilene (Karl) Ingebrigtson of Great Falls; brother, Fred (Marlene) Berkram of Cut Bank; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and brothers, Alan, Dennis and Melvin Berkram.
Gary was born August 15, 1944 at Cut Bank to Toralv and Rose (Weiss) Berkram. He grew up north of Cut Bank, attended Red River Country School and graduated from Cut Bank High School. He served in the US Army from December 1964 to September 1966. Gary and Sylvia Cowan were married June 4, 1967 in Edgar, Montana.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church, Glacier Stock Growers and the American Legion. Gary was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed high school basketball as well as professional football and baseball. He loved spending time with friends and family, dancing, and raising cattle.
