Gene Jacob Losing, 74, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on July 19th, 2011 from complications of liver disease. He was joyfully surrounded and supported by his children in his final days. A memorial service is planned for 2: 30 PM Friday, July 22nd at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 602 East Main Street in Cut Bank, MT, 59427 with Pastor Bear officiating. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery in the family plot. Whitted Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Gene was born in Sweetgrass, MT on October 12th, 1936 to Rudolph and Bertha (Renner) Losing. He attended school first north of Cut Bank at a country school and later in Cut Bank. Gene left high school and enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in Korea in the 24th Infantry Division, Co D 3rd Engineer Battalion. On October 25th of 2010, Gene was proud to receive his honorary high school diploma from the state of MT for serving in a war zone on active duty. Upon his honorable discharge and returning from Korea in 1958, Gene split his work between farming in the spring and summer for Minnerd Berget north of Cut Bank, and working the oil rigs in Wyoming in the winter. Up until the time of his death, Gene often reminisced about his time farming with Minnerd and his love for the land. Gene’s favorite pastime was to drive around and look at the crops and when riding with him, you often would notice he only paid attention to what was growing in the fields.
Gene was united in marriage to Vicki Jacobson on November 27th, 1965 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Cut Bank and from this union came Gene’s crowning joy, his four children. With the addition of a family, Gene needed to find stable year round employment which took him to working for Dodd Mead and Bill Edens at Dodd’s Wholesalers in 1967. After Dodd’s Wholesalers sold to Jerry Noble Tires, Gene spent a short time as a Manager of the store in Cut Bank prior to leaving and founding Cut Bank Tire with partners, Phil and Bonnie Roberts, and Vicki Losing in 1983 on North Central Avenue. After the closure of Jerry Noble Tires, Cut Bank Tire moved back to the old Dodd’s Wholesalers location on West Main in Cut Bank and remains a thriving business to this day under the ownership of Dave Losing, and employing Gene’s youngest son, Zeb. Gene could often be seen up until June 2011 working invoices in the office and standing vigil over the coffee pot, ensuring that no one pulled the coffee pot out prior to it being done brewing. As the founder and patriarch, his presence and guidance at the business will be missed by those who he served and mentored over the years.
Gene was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served as an usher and represented the parish at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN during the time that his kid’s attended the ELCA college. Gene will be remembered for his warm and loud laugh, and for his walking around town on a daily basis working to keep his blood sugar under control. It was nothing for Gene to put in 10 miles a day walking. In the fall of 2010, he was recognized as a “Great Grandpa” in his hometown paper for his dedication to his grandchildren and attending their sporting events. He was often time seen at all the basketball games, eating popcorn and enjoying the games. Gene also enjoyed watching the college girls softball World Series, Atlanta Braves baseball, and the Green Bay Packers. He was proud to have watched the Packers win the last Super Bowl prior to his death.
Gene is survived by his three sons and a daughter; David, and his wife Michelle of Cut Bank, MT; Steven, and his wife Michelle of Oxbow, ND; Zeb, and his wife Crystal of Cut Bank, MT; and Gina(Morris), and her husband Shane of Victoria, TX. Gene is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, Cori, Chance, Nathaniel, Naomi, Noah, Jake, Mariah, Alexa, Gianna, and Ella. Gene was expecting his 11th grandchild due in October. He is also survived by two brothers in Cut Bank, Walter (Melinda) Losing and Don Losing; and three sisters, Mildred Hensley of Holter Lake, MT, Alice Cowperthwaite of Sun City, AZ and Holter Lake, MT; and Sharon Norley of Butte, MT. Gene is also survived by his ex-wife Vicki Perkins of Carter, MT and many nieces and nephews. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild, Nadia Christina Losing of Oxbow, ND. He was also preceded in death by two brother-in-laws, Al Cowperthwaite of Holter Lake, MT. and Harold Hensley of Holter Lake, MT. Pallbearers for the service will be Phil Roberts, Jim Edwards, Jim Johnston, Robert Jacobson, Walt Losing, and Don Losing. Due to Gene’s love of his grandchildren, Cut Bank extracurricular activities, and his support of the importance of education, in lieu of flowers the family would like donations to be made to an annual memorial scholarship fund at Stockman Bank of Cut Bank to benefit a deserving high school senior in Gene’s memory.
