Eugene D. Riewer was born July 8, 1930 in Frazee, Minnesota and peacefully passed away on January 29, 2024 at Benefis Hospital in Great Falls. Gene left behind a legacy as a family business owner and was a pillar in the Conrad community.
Gene was one of 14 children, born into a tight-knit family in Frazee. In 1948 he planted roots in Conrad which was where he called home for over seven decades. His early years in Conrad included being drafted into the Korean War where he served courageously from 1951 to 1953 as a Communications Sergeant. Gene was honored with the Bronze Star; a testament to his dedication, valor and bravery. Gene’s commitment to the community extended beyond the family business. For 21 years he volunteered with the Conrad Volunteer Fire Department dedicating his time to ensuring the safety of the community. He also was a bus driver for the Conrad School District for 12 years where he drove his regular bus route and was one of the only drivers qualified to drive the team bus to local events and state tournaments.
In 1953 Eugene married Jane E. (Lonnevik) Riewer who was the love of his life. Together they embarked on a journey filled with dedication to each other, shared dreams, and raising a family. Together they had four children: Juli, Jerry, Janet, and Jeff. Jane was born July 2, 1935 and was his steadfast companion until her passing on December 29, 1986. Gene and Jane have nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Gene’s family was his primary focus in his later years. He never remarried.
Gene was an entrepreneur at heart, and he had a strong work ethic. He proudly owned and operated many businesses in Conrad for over 40 years. Those businesses not only contributed to the local economy financially, but his businesses also employed many citizens of Conrad during that time as well.
Gene was known for his quirky and snarky sense of humor, coupled with a stubbornness akin to a mule. His stocky stature, strength, and unique personality brought joy and laughter to those who knew him, and he will be dearly missed.
The Riewer family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the Conrad community for their continued love and support for Gene. The Riewer family thanks the Conrad community for your watchful eyes, care, and camaraderie. That meant the world to him.
A celebration of Eugene's life will take place in July 2024. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Saint Michaels Catholic Church, for a new sound system in Gene’s honor.
