Gen was born June 1, 1924 in Denver, Colorado to Cecil and Esther (Reynolds) Tenney. They moved to Conrad where Cecil was a florist and Esther was a telephone operator. Gen attended Conrad High School, where she played the trumpet and found her life-long best friend, Margaret Witt Tornga. While roller skating this cute redhead met her future husband, Richard (Dick) Harwood. His twinkling smile, pickup, gas and tire ration coupons won her heart. They married November 12, 1943 at the Christian Church in Conrad. They started their married life in a chicken coop, built a shop, then a house on the Porter Bench. She enjoyed social events including the Agawam Social Club and the Pondera Valley/Porter Bench Extension Club. Dick and Gen donated land for the Lincoln School. Gen loved to read and passed that love onto her children.
In 1960 Dick and Gen moved their family to a farm north of Devon. She enjoyed Women's Week, and was a member of Eastern Star. Raising her children was her passion, making sure they made it to all their events. In 1983 they bought their retirement home in Conrad. They celebrated 63 anniversaries together, sharing a banana split at the drive-in shortly before Dick's death in 2007. Gen lived for 3 years at the Marias Heritage Center in Shelby where she made many new friends including Diane Grimm.
Genny loved to entertain and had a true gift for hospitality. From not knowing how to boil water, Gen became an excellent cook, sending not even an insurance salesman away without at least a cup of coffee and a cookie. She never met a stranger and had a listening ear for anyone. Skipbo and pinochle were her favorite games.
Gen is survived by her children, Tom (Linda) of Devon, John (Carol) of Joliett, and Janis (Leonard) Lundby of Great Falls; half sister Joy Poeshl; grandchildren Christine Harwood of Great Falls, Tara Harwood and Colleen (Mike) Wohnoutka of Littleton CO, Mike (Brooke) Harwood and Kimberly (Dan) Wielenga of Bozeman, Craig Harwood of Billings, Curtis Harwood of Sand Point ID, and Kirk and Kendra Lundby of Great Falls; four great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Nell Tenney, Beth Applegate, Penny Chapman, Arlynn Harwood, Josephine Harwood, and Ariel Sharon Austad; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gen was preceded in death by her husband Dick; her brothers Al & Gene Tenney; and her granddaughter, Kara Lundby.
