Georgia D Knickerbocker, 91, ‘Matriarch’ of the Knickerbocker clan, died of natural causes on Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Marias Medical Center in Shelby. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, September 9, at the Whitted Funeral Chapel with burial to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery. Whitted Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her children, Denny and Vicki (Alvestad) Knickerbocker of Shelby, Pam Faulhaber and Jim Maloney of Shelby, and Laurie Elhard of Cut Bank; as well as 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lew; son Lenny; sisters Buddy Curtis and Esther Johnson; and several extended family members.
Georgia was born on January 20, 1020 on a farm near Manitou, ND, the eldest of three children, to Fred and Bessie Texel. She grew up and graduated from Ross High School where she and her sisters were members of the Women’s State Basketball Championship Team.
Georgia met and married Lew Knickerbocker in Wolf Point on February 7, 1942. After moving to Shelby she worked as a bookkeeper for KSEN Radio (formerly KIYI) Fulton Producing and Kneelan Teague before retiring.
Her passions were family, playing cards, bowling, football and basketball. Many of her grandchildren enjoyed shooting baskets with Gram, and were humbled when she could still outshoot them at age 70.
Georgia had an uncanny gift of making anyone who came to her home feel welcome. Once you met Georgia, you never forgot her. The coffee was always on, and you never knew who was going to be stopping in next.
Georgia was one of the youngest 91 year old, as attested by those who knew her. As the family historian, “her slippers” will be hard to fill. The family was blessed to have her in good health for 91 years.
