Gertie was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Fitzpatrick; her parents, Charles and Katie (Pias) Thomas; sisters, Mildred Haggerty, Margaret Woodward, and Gladys Thomas; and brothers Woodrow and Howard Thomas.
Gertie was born on October 16, 1915 in Choteau to Charles and Katie (Pias) Thomas. The family ranched west of Valier at Robare on Birch Creek. Gertie and her sister Mildred attended grade school in Depuyer riding horse-back to friends of the family and returning home on weekends. She and her sister Mildred attended high school at Chemawa Indian School in Oregon.
Gertie met the love of her life, Herbert Fitzpatrick, in 1935 and they were married in
August 1938. Herb’s work took them to Walla Walla, WA, Scotts Bluff, NE and Mountain Home, ID. World War II broke out and Herb enlisted in the US Navy. Upon his return after the war was over Herb and Gertie began a small ranching operation which grew into a fairly large operation. Gertie was quite a “cowboy” in her own right. She and Herb followed the rodeo circuit when they could where Herb participated in the roping events. They retired in the 1970’s and moved to Cut Bank, but Herb continued roping in the Old Timers Rodeos.
Gertie was a member of the Eagles and Moose Lodges and was an avid traveler until her health started to slow her down. She will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her.
