Harold Olson

February 18, 1936 — March 25, 2025

Conrad

Harold Olson lived a life defined by love, dedication, and service. More than a husband, father, grandfather, and leader, he was the heartbeat of his family and community, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished for generations.

Born on February 18, 1936, on a homestead north of Turner, Montana, he was the beloved son of Maurice and Fanny Olson. Growing up alongside his four brothers—Clarence, Glenn, Jerry, and Carl—he learned the values of hard work, resilience, and family. After graduating from high school in 1954, he pursued higher education at Concordia College for two years before following his passion for healthcare at the School of Pharmacy in Missoula, Montana, where he graduated in 1960.

His career as a pharmacist began in Havre, Montana, where he took his first position in the field. It was during this time that he met Ernestine Waldner, and the two were married. Soon after, they welcomed their first child, Tanya, born in 1966. That same year, the young family moved to Conrad, Montana, where they put down roots. In 1968, they celebrated the birth of their son, Darold.

With a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a dedication to his profession, Harold purchased Drake’s Drug, where he continued working as a pharmacist and serving the community. He remained at Drake’s until 1981, when he took a bold step forward, purchasing Pondera Drug Store. In 1982, he merged both businesses to form Olson’s Drug, a staple on Main Street that would become a cornerstone of the Conrad community. His work was more than just a career—it was a commitment to the health and well-being of the people he served.

In 1989, Harold sold Olson’s Drug to Pete McKeone, officially stepping into retirement. However, his passion for pharmacy never faded. He spent many more years working as a relief pharmacist, traveling around the state to provide his expertise wherever it was needed. His dedication to his profession and his community never wavered, even in retirement.

In 2002, Harold remarried to Betty Vandolah, and with their union, his family grew even larger. He welcomed her three children—Doug, Diane, and Deena—their spouses, and eight wonderful grandchildren into his life. As a husband, Harold showed unwavering love and support through every season of life. His bond with Betty was a testament to the power of true partnership and enduring love. Harold and Betty cherished, respected, and uplifted each other, showing all of us what it meant to be devoted and selfless in marriage. Together, they also shared a love of antique cars, traveling to many shows both regionally and across the state, making countless memories along the way.

Harold’s passion for antique cars was more than just a hobby—it was a lifelong love affair. He spent years collecting and meticulously restoring antique automobiles, giving each one the attention to detail. His dedication wasn’t just about the mechanics; it was about honoring the beauty and artistry of each car and preserving the history they carried. Among his many prized vehicles, his favorite was his 1937 Ford, a car that brought him endless joy and reflected his deep appreciation for the past.

As a father, Harold was a guiding light. He provided wisdom, strength, and a steady hand through life’s challenges. His strong work ethic and boundless love shaped the lives of his children and those around him. As a grandpa, he brought warmth and joy into every moment. He was the greatest storyteller, a trusted confidant, and a man of kindness and generosity. His presence was a source of comfort, and his love was a gift beyond measure.

But Harold’s influence didn’t stop with his family—it extended to his community and beyond. A true leader, he dedicated himself to numerous organizations, always striving to make Conrad a better place. He was deeply involved with the Pondera History Association, helping build the Transportation and Historical Museum, and played an active role in the Pondera Arts Council, Conrad Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Corporation, and Port Authority. His faith was also an essential part of his life, as he served on the Pondera Valley Lutheran Church Council.

Harold was a man of service, giving his time to organizations such as the JC’s, Red Cross Council, Montana Pioneer and Classic Auto Club, and the Skunk Wagon Club, often stepping up as President in nearly every organization he joined. Whether preserving history, promoting local business, or fostering community growth, Harold approached every role with passion, integrity, and an unshakable commitment to making a difference.

In every role he took on—husband, father, grandpa, community leader, church member, and car enthusiast—he gave his all, leaving a legacy of love, leadership, and passion that will be remembered for generations to come. We celebrate a man who lived a life full of purpose, guided by love and driven by a deep sense of duty. He was an inspiration to us all, and we are blessed to have known him, to have learned from him, and to have loved him.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Fanny Olson, his brothers Clarence (Eddie), Glenn, Jerry, and Carl (Mavis), his son Darold Olson, and his first wife Ernestine Olson. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Olson, his daughter Tanya Olson, and his stepchildren Doug Vandolah (Katie), Diane Brown (Brad), and Deena Breckenridge. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews who will forever cherish his memory.
