Harriet Krall, a longtime resident of Toole and Pondera countries, passed away May 31, 2012 at the age of 92 at the Marias Care Center of natural causes. Funeral mass will be Wednesday, June 6, at 10:30 am at St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Sunburst, where the visitation will be one hour before service time at the church. Burial will follow at the Sunburst Cemetery. Whitted Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be posted at www.whittedfuneralchapel.com.
Harriet Margaret McArdle Krall, of Irish and Scottish decent, was born in Anaconda, MT December 7, 1919 to Margaret (Scullon) and John “Jack” McArdle joining big sister Marion. Her mother was left alone to raise the girls, working as a waitress at Gamer’s in Butte. This brought a move into Uptown Butte and her extended family helped raise the girls. Harriet was very close to her “Uncle Jim” Scullon. She brought him to Sunburst when he was unable to be alone and cared for him until his passing. She attended Garfield Elementary School and Butte High School, graduating in 1938.
Harriet went to college in Bozeman, where on a ski trip she met a senior football player named Joseph Krall. They married in Butte on August 24, 1939. Her mother gave her a choice between a wedding dress and a washing machine; she chose the washing machine. Joe was a teacher and farmer/rancher which took them to several Montana towns - Hingham, Moccasin, Dillon, Fort Benton, Jackson, Melstone, Kevin and finally to Sunburst. Their first daughter, Harriet Margaret Krall, was born and Joe was called up to the war. She again had the help of her family in Butte while Joe was gone. After his discharge, Cora Lee Krall was born. Their love for each other lasted for 67 years until Joe passed away.
She, along with her husband and two daughters, moved to the Sunburst area in 1951, where her husband taught agricultural class for returning veterans. In 1959 they bought a farm east of Sunburst where, alongside her husband, she helped raise hogs and grain crops.
In 1975 they retired from their farm and lived in Sunburst where they travelled most of the continental United States as well as Alaska and Australia. They then moved to Conrad to be nearer doctors and other services. She recently resided at Marias Care Center in Shelby where they took very loving care of her.
Harriet was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, the What-Not Club, and church activities. She loved to sew and did beautiful needlepoint pictures with which she blessed her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed crocheting and made many afghans.
She is survived by her daughters, Harriet Karst of Sunburst and Cora Lee Copenhaver and husband, Ron, of Menifee, CA; grandchildren Teresa Karst of Kalispell, Natalie Karst and husband Jeff Beasley of West Sacramento, CA, and Lisa and Rob Curtis of Alta Loma, CA. She has two great-grandchildren, Robert Curtis and AnnMarie Beasley; and her sister’s grandchildren, Kathy Rowe in Butte and Terry Smith in the Seattle area. In addition to her extended family, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, and her son-in-law, Bill Karst.
