Helen K. Smith, 84, a retired waitress and business owner from Shelby, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2013, at the Marias Care Center due to natural causes. At her request cremation has taken place and a Celebration of her Life will be held at a later date. Whitted Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include her daughter, Kim (Rick) MacDonald of Shelby and son William (Kris) Smith of Gilbert, AZ; grandsons, Tanner and Robbie; and extended family, Kenny, Rosie, Amy and Joe.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Smith; sister, Anna Mae Phillips; and special friend, Ralph Cowan.
Helen was born April 28, 1928 at Gold Butte to James & Mary (Gardipee) Knappen and was raised and educated in Shelby. She married William Smith in 1948 at Choteau.
Helen was a waitress and, along with her husband, owned or operated several eating establishments in the area for many years.
She was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, the VFW, and American Legion Auxiliary.
Helen enjoyed doing puzzles, playing cards, watching soup operas, betting on sporting events and rooting for the Seattle Sea Hawks.
