Jerry D. Kennedy

April 24, 1941 — October 9, 2016

Jerry D. Kennedy, longtime Shelby, MT resident, went peacefully to be with his Lord on October, 9, 2016.

Jerry was born to Brady and Lela Kennedy of Cut Bank, MT. He attended Cut Bank High School and was married to Esther Alta Seymour on July 28 th , 1960. Jerry served honorably in the US Navy during the Viet Nam War. He was the recipient of a commendation for his exemplary service. He worked for Dow Chemical for several years learning the oilfield business before returning to Shelby in the mid-1970s. He was a long-time businessman in Shelby, MT employing dozens of young men over the years. He started his small oil business in the mid-80s and was able to keep it going through the lean years becoming one of the largest independent oil producers in the state of Montana. Jerry was a welcoming and giving person, opening his home to foster children and any others who were in need. Jerry loved people and loved helping others. He was a gifted craftsman making many beloved heirlooms for his grandchildren ranging from rocking horses and cradles to high chairs. His love for his grandchildren knew no bounds. The only thing Jerry loved more than his family was the Lord. He was a dedicated Christian and could often be found in the First Baptist church of Shelby. He became an ordained minister and preached in Conrad, Cut Bank, and, most recently, Mesquite, NV. Perhaps his greatest source of pride was that he was the minister of record marrying his granddaughter Sydnie Kennedy to her husband Matthew and his grandson Jeremiah Kennedy to his wife Danielle.

Jerry was preceded in death by Esther Kennedy his beloved wife of 53 years; he is survived by his sons David (Debbie) of Cut Bank, MT; Daniel (Tristy) of Savannah, GA; and Gregory (Teri) of Birmingham, AL. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Jeremiah, Lela, Lee, Sydnie, Kaelie, Tristen, Victoria, and Alexis. He was blessed to have four wonderful great grandchildren Kaydance, Kolbie, Levi, and Keegan. In addition, he is survived by his sisters Louise Wolff, Violet Gorder, and Vivian Rogers; and brother Herschel Kennedy; as well as numerous nieces of nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Kenneth Kennedy. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday October 29, 2016 at the First Baptist Church in Shelby, MT. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony.
