Leo Zarn, of Cut Bank, passed away at the age of 90 on Monday, October 6, 2014 at Glacier Care Center.
At Leo’s request, no services will be held. The family held a gathering on Saturday, October 11 in Lewistown, Montana. Local arrangements have been entrusted to Whitted Funeral Chapel.
Leo was born to Gotlib and Minne Zarn on December 20, 1923 in Clarissa, Minnesota . He grew up in Minnesota until the age of 19 when he enlisted in the military and entered basic training on November 28, 1942 in Clayborne, Louisiana. He was attached to the 36th Division of the 141st infantry, Company D, Heavy Weapons. He entered WWII in Southern Italy in the liberation effort there, and then he boarded a ship and landed in Normandy on D-Day where he fought up through France, into Germany until the end of the war. He stayed on until after the war was over to help with after action activities and then returned home in December of 1945. Among other medals, Leo received the Purple Heart.
After returning home to Minnesota, Leo boarded a train to Glacier Park to work for the summer. This is when he met the love of his life Betty Fagan. They married on Sept 20, 1947 and settled in Cut Bank where he worked at the oil refinery until he retired in 1985.
Leo and Betty have five boys, Jim Zarn (sons Ben and Eric), Jerry & Michelle (daughter Tanya), Bill & Lucy (son Shane & daughters Heather & Katie), Gary & Bert (son Johnathon & daughter Catherine), Randy & Soni (daughters Kayla & Kenzie), and 7 great grandkids. Leo has 2 living sisters Lilly Zarn and Becky Manska. He was proceed in death by his parents and siblings, Alfred Zarn and Laverne Hamas.
