Leonard Gordon “Pogo” Isbister, 79, passed away April 21, 2020 at Marias Care Center.
Leonard was born December 10, 1940 at home on the farm to John R. and Ethel Isbister. He was welcomed and delivered by his great grandmother midwife, Harriet Isbister.
He grew up on the farm and went to a little country school. He helped his father, John, with farming operations and helped his mom with basic chores. He was the oldest of three children; a loyal big brother who was an excellent student and was exemplary in school. At one point he stayed with his uncle Ralph and aunt Florence in Debden in order to attend high school. He also played a little hockey and ball as a young teenager.
While in Canada, he served his country Canada in the RCAF. Later Pogo served in the USA army when he lived in Montana.
He worked for the City of Shelby Utilities and later in construction. Many homes in Shelby were recipients of his expert carpentry and “pickiness”.
He was married to Carol Freeman and they had one son, Michael Stuart Isbister They later divorced.
Pogo was friendly with everyone; he was an avaricious reader of novels and frequented Shelby library. He loved bowling and golf in his younger days; Pogo was a friend to all.
He is preceded in death by son, Michael, and Michael’s mother, Carol.
Survivors include his 101 year old Mom, Ethel Isbister; his sister, Faye (Rod); his paternal aunt, Lorna Johnston; his maternal aunts, Pansy Ahenakew, Loretta (Fred) Sasakamoose, Leona ( Cliff ) Ahenakew, Lillian Isbister, Jean (Arnold) Ahenakew, and Doreen Isbister; his maternal uncles, Arnold ( Karen) Isbister, and Sandy Isbister; plus numerous cousins, nieces , nephews and relatives in southern Alberta and in northern Saskatchewan from the clans of Isbister, Sasakamoose, Dreaver, Johnston, McKays, Robertson.
His mother and sister are grateful to family and friends who visited him at home and while in the Marias Care Center. A special thank you to the Marias Care Center employees for caring for their son, brother, and uncle.
We commit you Pogo into the Lord’s loving arms…always loved.
