Lucille Alta (Bieri) Broughton, 93, passed from this life surrounded by the love of family and friends at the Marias Medical Center on Saturday, March 3, 2012.
Lucille was born on June 15, 1918 in Cottonwood Township, ND to Joseph Gottlieb and Margarith (Stahli) Bieri. She was the youngest of 12 children, and she was the last surviving member of the Bieri family of her generation.
Lucille received her formal education in Ross and Blaisdell, ND. After graduating from high school in 1935 she attended business school in Minot, ND. Her first job was as a bookkeeper at the Ellison Department Store.
In the spring of 1943 she travelled by train to Pittsburg, CA where she and Larry Broughton were married on May 28. This union lasted until January 16, 1992 when Larry passed away. They were married just short of 49 years. They spent most of their married life in Shelby, where they owned Larry’s Mobil Service Station and the L&L Motel. Lucille worked in the Treasurer’s Office at the court house from the mid 1940’s until her retirement in July 1983. She was the Toole County Deputy Treasurer for many years.
Lucille was very active in the VFW Auxiliary, having become a member on April 4, 1957 and maintaining a continuous membership until her death. She served as treasurer of the auxiliary for many years before retiring from that post to care for Larry when he became ill.
Lucille loved to travel and she and her sister-in-law, Evelyn, took 11 bus trips across the western states and Canada before it become physically impossible for them to continue.
Lucille loved to play cards and work the daily crossword, but her greatest hobby was people. She knew and loved everyone. She kept in contact with all of her nieces and nephews around the world. She never forgot a birthday and listened to you whether you were 2, 22 or 92! She had great fun with her computer and spent numerous hours keeping in touch with the people she knew and loved.
A faithful member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, she enjoyed worshipping in the “L” row.
Survivors include her sister-in law, Evelyn Sanders, 44 nieces and nephews, 67 great nieces & nephews, and 47 great- great nieces & nephews. She also leaves behind life-long loved ones, Bernard and Larry Krystkowiak and their families, and numerous friends including Guy & Shirley Dubois.
Funeral services will be Monday, March 12 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Shelby, MT, at 11am with burial in the Veterans’ section of Mountain View Cemetery. Viewing will be Sunday at the Whitted Funeral Chapel from 1pm-8pm. Condolences may be posted at www.whittedfuneralchapel.com.
