Mary was born February 5, 1953 to Henry and Rose Bullshoe Bird. She was the youngest of 8 children. Mary grew up on Badger Creek and enjoyed her life in the country.
She attended school in Browning, where she graduated with her High school diploma. After graduation she moved to Kansas and attended Haskell Jr. College for 2 years. Mary also attended the Lady of the Lourdes School in Great Falls Mt. She also attended a Catholic School in Kalispell for a brief time. She spent some time at Blackfeet Community College as well.
Mary met the love of her life when she was just 15 years old. It wasn’t until October 13, 1974 that her and Sammy were married. They had already started their family and were raising them on Badger Creek. As a family they lived all over the reservation. They lived on the famous 600 block in Browning and have many adventurous stories about there. They lived in Heart Butte until a fire took the family home and they relocated to Boarding School. They lived there for quite some time before Sam and Mary got notice that they had a new home in Heart Butte. They have called Sacred lodge Street House #4 home for the last 22 years.
Mary had many passions in her life and enjoyed many different activities. Alongside her husband Sam they have enjoyed many years of horse racing, both flat track and Indian Relay. They have traveled all across the states and Canada. She also played hand game. She has won many tournaments with her husband, children and friends she made along the way. Another family activity was fishing. She enjoyed being by the lakes just spending time with her boys and cooking up a good meal for them. There were times that no fish were caught but it was time together that was more important. She also enjoyed watching her kids and grandkids participate in sporting events. They were big Heart Butte Warrior fans. You could always see her and dad sitting right inside the door.
Mary had a very strong belief in her Catholic Faith. She shared her love of the church with all of her family. Family was also a strong force in her life. She loved everyone and was always supportive of what they were doing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Rose; Brothers, Jimmy, Jack, Clayton, Winston, Rodney, and Kenneth; Sister, Audra Bird.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Samuel F.; Sons, Francis “Stubby” (Raynie), Samuel L. “Lil Sam” (Lisa), Darren (Lorena), Clayton “CJ” (Lisa), Michael “Mike”, and Carl (Stephanie). She has numerous grandkids and great grandkids. She also has many nieces, nephew, cousins, and extended family.
Mary had a very kind and gentle heart. She will be greatly missed by everyone who has had contact with her.
