Neils Alfred Olsen, 97, a long time Cut Bank resident, WWII veteran and retired farmer, died Thursday, February 6, 2014 at the Glacier Care Center. He was a quiet, gentle and humble man and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Alfred was born September 16, 1916 to Danish immigrant parents, Andrew and Laura (Nielsen) Olsen near Withee, WI where he was raised and educated. A Navy veteran, he served in the Pacific during World War II.
He married Wilda Dearth in 1946 in Owen, WI. Their honeymoon was their move to a farm near the Del Bonita Port of Entry. Alfred and Wilda moved into Cut Bank in 1959. They celebrated 59 years of marriage before Wilda passed in 2005.
Survivors include his 3 daughters, Carol (Neil) Clement, Cut Bank, Jane (Pete) Bailey, Sparks, NV and Linda (Bill) Doty, Golden, CO; 3 grandchildren, Janece (Paul) Moment, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA, Jason (Lori) Ekman, Hillsborough, OR and Joy (Chris) Dewell of Belgrade, MT; and 3 great-grandchildren, Amira Moment, Elijah and Rowan Dewell. Surviving are three sisters, Ellen Bower of New Port Richey, FL, Ida Hamilton of Horn Lake, MI and Lillian Miller of Withee, WI. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife and a sister.
Alfred farmed near Del Bonita for 38 years. He loved farming and he loved fishing, spending many winter days in his ice house. He never lost his interest in mechanical things, especially cars, trucks and tractors.
He was also active in the Cut Bank Community Bible Church where his memorial service will be held Thursday, February 13 at 2:00 pm.
