Ona Mae Snuffer Schwan, of Chester passed away on Friday, November 4, 2016 At Liberty County Medical Center Long Term Care.
Funeral service will be 10:00 am on Wednesday, November 9 at the Chester Assembly of God Church, followed by interment at the Lothair Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Rockman Funeral Chapel in Chester.
She was born March 30, 1924 in a tiny three-room house on her father's homestead, about 16 miles NW of Chester, MT. She was the youngest of four children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Schwan, her mother, Alida Arick Snuffer, her father, Ben Snuffer, her sister, Elsie Snuffer Budgett and brothers, Roy Snuffer and Darwin Snuffer.
Frank and Ona were married on June 29, 1947 - and though they had no children of their own, they were much loved by their numerous nieces and nephews, and the children who grew up near them in the neighborhood.
Ona graduated from Chester High School and later worked for the county. She was Postmistress for Lothair, and later for Galata, until she retired. During the war, she lived in Seattle at the YWCA and worked for the government.
Besides working outside the home, Ona was an active member of the Chester Assembly of God Church, and various community organizations. She worked the farm alongside her husband - always working in the fields during harvest, and cooking for whichever crew was helping at the time.
You never left Ona's house hungry. She was accomplished at many things and besides being an excellent cook, she was a talented seamstress and an avid gardener of both vegetables and flowers. She played the piano by ear, and was always available to help her neighbors. Ona loved her cats, music of all kinds, her family, her friends, and most of all, her God. Those of us who loved her will miss her terribly, and cherish our memories of time spent with her.
