Long time Shelby resident, (67 years), Pat Umphrey, age 86, died at The Marias Care Center on July 27, 2015.
Pat was born November 20, 1928, to Louis and Lena Kronebusch of Conrad, Montana. She was raised on the family farm and attended country school and Conrad schools. After graduating from business college, she worked as a bookkeeper in Shelby. In 1949 she married Harley Umphrey, was married for 57 years and raised three children, Bill, Shelley and Tracy.
She developed a top-notch bookkeeping and tax preparation business from her home, eventually moving on to owning Pat’s Diner. She was known for her delicious meals and pies throughout Shelby and the outlying area.
Pat was a wonderful wife and mother. She was an avid gardener and she enjoyed reading, playing bridge and was a whiz at crossword and jig saw puzzles. Pat was a devout Catholic and a steadfast friend. She laughed often, always making time for everyone. Even as she was failing with dementia, she was able to have a funny comeback or smart-alecky reply that made folks laugh. She shall be dearly missed.
Her husband, Harley (died in 2006); her parents; and her brothers Donatus and Kenneth Kronebusch preceded her in death. She is survived by her children; Bill (Janie) Umphrey of Spokane, WA, Shelley (David) Berry of Anchorage, AK, Tracy Umphrey (Marc Schildkraut) of Seattle, WA, her five beautiful granddaughters; Mindy Umphrey, Ally and Shay Berry, Risha and Leah Schildkraut and her numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are scheduled for August 8, 2015 at 11:00 am at St. William’s Catholic Church in Shelby, Montana. She will be interred with her husband at a private service in the family plot in Chester, Montana.
The family would like to thank all those who loved and cared for Pat at the Marias Care Center, the Marias Heritage Center, and the Marias Medical Center.
