Phyllis Roberts Nanini Sheffield, 86, a longtime resident of Cut Bank, died September 12, 2012 at Cut Bank. Funeral services were held Saturday (Sept. 15) at 3:00 p.m. at the Cut Bank Assembly of God Church with Pastor Rich Greenwald officiating; interment services followed at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Phyllis was born at New Rockford, North Dakota to Granvild and Grace (Warren) Austin on December 16, 1924; she was raised and educated at Rugby, N.D. and following her graduation moved to Portland, Oregon and worked in a department store during World War II.
She later returned to Rugby and married Ralph Roberts; they came to Cut Bank in the late 1940’s where she had since resided. She was employed by Mary Blumstrum Insurance and later by the firm’s floral business. Phyllis later worked at Cut Bank Greenhouse before becoming employed by the Glacier County Extension office where she remained for many years until her retirement. Her husband Ralph preceded her in death in 1981.
Phyllis married Bill Nanini and he preceded her in death in 1991. A person who was deeply involved in community affairs, she served on many boards and public service organizations including the Glacier Weed Board and Planning Board, the Historical Society, Extension Homemakers and with the Pink Ladies of Northern Rockies Medical Center. Phyllis had been an active longtime member of the Cut Bank Assembly of God Church. She married John Sheffield and he preceded her in death in 2009.
A person of numerous pursuits and interests, Phyllis had been an expert gardner and seamstress and enjoyed painting using the oil medium for her work. She also enjoyed creative writing, lending her skill to a weekly newspaper column entitled “Up In The Attic” by “Ima Collector”.
Surviving her are her children, Warren Roberts (Sandy) of Billings; Rebecca Gates (David) and Phillip Roberts (Bonnie), all of Cut Bank; her sisters, Norma Schiff of Rugby, ND; Betty Spaulding of Goleta, CA; and Margaret Williams of Lakewood, CA; 7 grandchildren, Matthew, Kelly, Jeremy, Jennifer, Linsey, Neil and Will as well as 6 great-grandchildren.
