Sigrid ‘Sig’ Amanda Suphellen Grinde, 96, died peacefully of natural causes on Sunday, March 18, 2012, at the Marias Care Center in Shelby with her son, Howie, and his wife, Donna, at her side.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 2:00 pm, Friday, March 30th, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 222 Second Avenue South, Shelby, with a reception to follow at the Senior Citizens Center, 739 Benton. Whitted Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Sig was born May 5, 1915, to Andrew and Julia (Perhus) Suphellen in Fargo, North Dakota, joining her two-year-old brother, Harold. When Sig was two years old, the family immigrated to Toole County to prove up Andrew’s brother’s homestead and establish the family farm.
She attended country grade schools, started high school at age thirteen in Oilmont, finished high school at Shelby High School, and was the last survivor of the Class of 1932.
On Sig's 18th birthday, May 5, 1933, she wed Ingebrigt Jensen Grinde and they began life on their farm. Life was never easy and oftentimes desperate. She persevered. The lessons of frugality learned during the Great Depression years remained with Sig throughout her entire life. Her 100% Norwegian heritage provided her with a strong work ethic, core values and strength of character.
She was truly a woman of the land. She loved Toole County, in particular, the beautiful Sweetgrass Hills. Most of all, she loved the people and willingly assisted anyone in need.
Sig had a remarkable memory, especially regarding Toole County events and area families' histories.
She always enjoyed a lively game of bingo or cards with her many friends. She and son Howie played cribbage during his monthly visits, their last cribbage game being in February. Sig won.
Gramma Sig is survived by her two sons, Jim (Joyce) of Columbia Falls and Howard (Donna) of Missoula; and four grandchildren, Jerry Grinde of Great Falls; Judy Hajek (Mike) of Colorado Springs, CO; Michone (Chris) Slater of Everett, Washington; and Jon Grinde of Coeur d’Alene, ID.
Seven great-grandchildren survive. Jimmy and Andrew Grinde of Great Falls; Kassi Appenzeller of Queen Creek, AZ; Jake and Tristan Slater of Everett, WA; and Kelsi and Jake Grinde of Coeur d’Alene, ID.
Also surviving are cousins by marriage, the George and Jeanette Rankin family and Berthadean Rankin Bucher, numerous Perhus family members in North Dakota and Minnesota, and her countless friends in the Toole County area.
Sig is preceded in death by her mother, Julia Perhus Suphellen, who passed away in 1929 when Sig was thirteen; her father, Andrew Suphellen, in 1963; her husband, I. J. Grinde, in 1975; and her brother, Harold Suphellen, in 1984.
The family is grateful for the many friends who faithfully visited Sig during the eight years she resided at the nursing home, especially Omi Jovanovich, Joyce Dye and Lucille Robertson who were there with her daily.
The family sincerely thanks the staff at Marias Medical Center; the nursing home employees for their care and friendships; and the hospital staff for their end-of-life care and compassion.
Sig was a caring, courageous and amazingly strong woman. She was an inspiration to those blessed to know her and she will be sorely missed.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Whitted Funeral Chapel. Cremains have been interred at Mountain View Cemetery with her beloved father and brother.
Memorials are suggested to the Sigrid A. Grinde Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the Toole County Education Fund, 301 1st Street South, Shelby, MT, 59474.
