Stephen R. Brown, lifelong Chester area farmer, died of natural causes on September 1, 2022. Steve was born September 3, 1932, in the same house on the farm as where he passed. He was born to Fred and Frances Brown, and joined brother, Max, and sister, Carol.
Steve attended Montana State College (now MSU) from 1950-1954, where he graduated with a degree in industrial arts. While there he joined Pi Kappa fraternity, and met his future wife, Dorothy Ann Larsen, a member of AO Pi sorority and homecoming queen. The pair married July 11, 1954, in Forsyth, Montana, and came back to the Chester farm.
Steve was drafted into the U.S. Army shortly after returning to the farm and served two years at a missile base near Chicago, Illinois. After his military service, he returned to the farm and remained actively engaged in farming until his death. Besides farming, Steve, an accomplished wood worker, built and remodeled several houses, and crafted numerous cabinetry and furniture items, enjoying this until his death. He also processed meat with his brother, Max.
Steve and Dorothy’s marriage produced four sons: Steve, Jr. (Teresa), Tom (Dede), Rob (Sandy) and Jim (Diane). He had nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Steve’s hobbies included bowling league and attending sporting events at local schools – particularly if his sons or grandchildren were playing. Steve was also active in the community, serving on the Chester school board, Sweet Grass Lodge board, United Methodist Church board and local ASCS boards.
Prior to Dorothy’s death in 1991, she and Steve enjoyed traveling in the United States and attending concerts and events in the local area.
Steve is survived by his four sons and their spouses, nine grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, special friend, Sue Fritz, and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins from the Brown, Larsen and Kammerzell families.
