Sylvia Irene Berg Peterson, 83, our beloved mother, grandmother and friend, died May 4, 2011 at her home. Visitation is Monday, May 9, from 1-8:00 pm at the Whitted Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, May 11, 2011 at St Luke’s Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery with a reception to follow at the Lutheran Church. Survivors include her son John Schmidt of Shelby, son Marlin Schmidt (Becky Keller) of Las Cruces NM, daughter Deborah Fisher of Shelby, and son Timothy (Dawn Eby) Schmidt of Layton UT; grandchildren Tammie (Jason) Barcus of Havre, Chance Fisher (Evangelina Allen) of Great Falls, Jennifer Fisher-Moore (fiancée Glenn Geisen) of Shelby, Kayla (Darren) Colwell of Ogden UT, Kristin Schmidt of Layton UT and Owen Schmidt of Layton UT; great-grandchildren McKenna and Alexandria Barcus of Havre, Samantha, Christopher and Vanessa Allen of Great Falls, and Justice and Weston Moore of Shelby; brother Melvin (Agnus) Berg, brother Laverne Berg, brother Milton (Joyce) Berg, sister Delores (Art) Sailor, sister Verdine (Rodney) Hofer, brother Arthur (Mary Jo) Berg, and Larry Berg of Turtle Lake and Underwood, ND. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter Cynthia; husband Reuben Schmidt and husband Douglas Peterson; and brothers Emil, Dale and Delmer Berg.
Sylvia was born February 21, 1928 in Turtle Lake, ND, the fourth of eleven children and the eldest daughter of Christian and Lydia (Schauer) Berg. The family homesteaded in the Turtle Lake community. She attended Turtle Lake Elementary and High School where she graduated as Class Valedictorian. She sacrificed and took the role of caretaker to her younger brothers and sisters. Reuben and Sylvia married after the war in June 1945 and were married for over 39 years. To this union, four children, whom she loved dearly were born. Sylvia was the anchor of her family and unselfishly loved and cared for them through the good and hard times. She worked as a secretary at Shelby City Hall for many years. In March 1984, she married Douglas Peterson and they became owners of the Teagardens / Commodore Hotel. Sylvia’s passion was selling Avon and was a member of the Avon Presidential Club. We love you and you will be missed.
