Terry ‘Sonny’ Gilmore Smith 69, a retired milk man from Browning died July 5, 2011 at Benefis Health Care Systems due to a long illness. Rosary service will be Sunday July 10, 2011 at 7 pm at Old Eagle Shields Center with the funeral services to follow Monday July 11, 2011 at 11 am at the Little Flower Parish. Terry was born November 6, 1941 in Fort Totten, North Dakota to William and Irene (Cavanaugh) Smith of Great Falls. The family then moved to Great Falls where he was raised a Catholic and attended school. Terry joined the Navy; then after four years of service to his country, he gained employment at Beatrice Foods in Great Falls.
Terry was an enthusiastic classic car lover who enjoyed sharing his knowledge about the history of most classic cars he saw either driving by or on display at a local car show. Terry was a member of Arrowhead Car Club which he enjoyed. He also had a passion for fishing and hunting in his younger years.
Terry made a career from his first job in becoming a milk man. He worked in Great Falls at Meadow Gold, Vita Rich, and then later where he made his permanent home in Browning being an Independent Milk Distributor otherwise known as “The Milk Man”. Terry was known by many for his humor and his joking ability. There was always laughter in the room when Terry was present. He had a knack for helping people when they were in need.
His family and grandkids were the love of his life. He was always an active fan in the stands at his grandkids functions. Terry had a special place in his heart for each and every one of his grandkids.
Survivors include his wife Judy (Fowler) Smith of Browning; children, Terri Jo (Dennis) Gumenberg of Great Falls, Scott (Tanya) Smith of Browning, Amber (Shane) Boggs of Browning; two special people who he helped raise just like his own kids, Tamien LaBuff, Leslee Kennedy; as well as his SPECIAL grandkids Joey Whitson, Josie Lutz, Ashton Smith, Chase Smith, Seth Boggs, Mason and Madison Boggs. Also surviving are his sisters. Mary (Tom) Wimer of Wheeling WV, Rita Heberle of Great Falls MT, Bonnie (Don) Ewing of Marshall MN, Barbara LaFever of Great Falls MT, Myrtle (Tim) Riddle of Fort Benton MT, and Corri Smith of Great Falls MT. Terry had a special place for each and every one of his nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Irene Smith, and grandparents of both side of the family.
