Tom Hastings

November 14, 1955 — July 17, 2016

Thomas David Hastings, 60, was born to David and LaVonne Hastings on Nov 14, 1955.  He died peacefully in his sleep on July 17, 2016. He was the 4th of 7 children, and resided on the family farm at the time of his death.

As a child, he attended Strauss School, and graduated from Brady High School in 1974.  He then attended Vocational School in Helena for Carpentry.  From that background he helped build and remodel many of the homes in his family.

Tom was also one of the first organic farmers in the Conrad area.  He was a founding partner of Timeless Seeds and was featured in the book “Lentil Underground” by Liz Carlisle.  He worked closely with Senator Jon Tester in the growth of organic lentils. During this time he was also a member of AERO and sponsored tours of the farm.

He also loved antiques and “rusty gold”, and auction sales.  Through his love of collecting he had a highly rated and successful eBay store and 2 antique stores in Conrad.

In his spare time, Tom was an avid fan of NASCAR racing and had the hats to prove it!

After the untimely death of his father in 1986, Tom managed the family farm and became a wonderful caretaker of his mom, handling life with a rare sense of humor, wisdom and candor. He was a gentle passionate soul, who loved animals, and gave generously to people his time and knowledge.

He is survived by Lavonne Hastings (mother), Kathy Hager (Darell), Judy Goudette (Rob), Mark Hastings (Peggy), Diana Krumm (Cory), Carol McCormick (Sam) and Elizabeth Hashimoto (Thomas) and many “special and favorite” nieces and nephews.  He also shared a birthday with his nephew Andy Hoye, and they enjoyed celebrating together for many years.

Services will be held Thursday, July 21st at the Pondera Funeral Home at 1pm with a graveside service following at Hillside Cemetery.  A celebration of life will follow the burial at 303 S Iowa. Refreshments will be served.

Tom, we miss you already!!
