Thomas “Tom” Shephard, 78, passed away October 15, 2021 with his family by his side. He was born March 8, 1943 in Conrad, to Gordon and Frances Shephard. He grew up in Valier alongside his siblings: Robert, Dale, Kathy, and Barb. After graduating Valier High School in 1961, he joined the Army in May 1965 and was honorably discharged. After serving in the Army, he worked for Bill Jones for many years, from outfitting on the Front, to ranch duties. He then worked several years in Dupuyer at the local grocery store meat cutting. Tom then changed his career and worked a variety of different jobs for the State of Montana. Starting in 1977, he worked at Vita Rich Dairy, later purchased by Meadow Gold, until his retirement in 2008. Tom married Barbara Askling in November 1970 and were together for almost 48 years before her passing in 2018. They spent many weekends at the lake, fishing, boating, and spending time with their loved ones. Tom had a strong love and respect for the Rocky Mountain Front. He spent countless days in the mountains with his nephew, John Shephard, hunting many different animals and passing time over a cold beverage. Tom passed down his love of fishing, hunting, and the outdoors to all his grandkids.
Tom is survived by his sisters, Barbara Anderson and Kathy Black; his children, Traci (Daryl) Vandenacre and Robin (Tim) VanDyke; seven grandchildren, Casey Vandenacre, Cari (Jared) Giard, Megan Vandenacre, Kyle Vandenacre, Jaren VanDyke, Morgan VanDyke, Dalayne VanDyke; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
