Walter Ehlers Mundt, 94, a retired dairy branch manager, hunting guide in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and independent contractor from Shelby, passed away February 3, 2013 at the Marias Care Center in Shelby from natural causes. Visitation is Friday, February 8, from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Whitted Funeral Chapel. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 9, at St Luke’s Lutheran Church. Burial will follow with military honors in the Mountain View Cemetery.
Walter was born May 20, 1918 at Carter, MT to Walter William and Emma (Ehlers) Mundt. He attended Apple School in Carter and graduated from Great Falls High School in 1936. In 1941 Walt joined the US Army and served in the East Indies, Papuan, New Guinea, Australia and the Southern Philippines as a medical supply sergeant. He was discharged 1945 receiving a Philippine Liberation Medal with Bronze Star, American Defense Service Medal and Asiatic Pacific Service Medal. He returned to Great Falls where he worked at the Ayrshire Dairy as a bookkeeper and in 1953 became their branch manager in Shelby. Walt purchased the Tastee Freeze Drive In in Shelby in 1959 which was operated by his sister Helen and her husband Bernard Long. After retiring from the Ayrshire Dairy he became an independent contractor doing remodels and new construction.
On July 29 1945, Walter and Verna Hanson were married in Great Falls and had 5 children. Verna passed away in 1998. Walter and Dorothy Fitzpatrick were married in Shelby on May 15, 2000.
Walt had been a member of the Lions Club, NRA and VFW and served on the Senior Center Board, St. Luke’s Church Council, Shelby City Council, Marias Fair Board and the Area 3 Council on Aging. In 1995 he was chosen as Shelby’s Senior Citizen of the Year and also as the Area 3 Senior Citizen of the Year. Walt enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family and also bowling, square dancing and cards of any kind. He also loved to travel and enjoyed the scenery in much of the US and Canada.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Shelby; children, Walter (Angelita) Mundt of Sterling, VA, Carol of Shelby, Don (Amy Linn) of Missoula, Gordon (Chris) of Belgrade and Lila (Paul) Cebulla of Bozeman; step-children, Sandra (Ed) Grogan of Gig Harbor, WA, Diane (Dale) Duff of Whitefish, Randy (Connie) Hammer of Las Vegas, NV; and step-son-in-law Brian Kessner of Roberts, MT. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandsons and 1 great-great-grandson as well as 13 step-grandchildren, 16 step-great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Verna; sisters, Eileen (Richard) Brandt, Ina (George) Porter, Anita Mundt, Sue Barkley and Helen (Bernard) Long; brother, Gerald; and step-daughter, Laura Kessner.
In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to St Luke’s Lutheran Church, Shelby Senior Center, Marias Museum of History and Art all in Shelby or to a recipient of the donor’s choice.
